New Vision for Sustainability Studies at Mason

“Mason now has a guide for integrating sustainability across our academic programs,” said Fellow of Sustainability Studies Dann Sklarew, once  A Vision for Sustainability in Academic Endeavors at Mason appeared on the University’s Sustainability Studies web site.

Based on insights from across Mason campuses, this vision aims to be bold: “Mason will rank among the top 50 US universities in sustainability studies.”  Provost Stearns, his senior staff, and the Office of Sustainability reviewed and support the newly articulated role for  Mason, “leading strategic research, education and service to promote a more sustainable campus, community and world.”

Dr. Sklarew readily admits that both the vision and means to achieve it should be “perpetually tentative.” Nonetheless, he and others who have contributed to the first iteration hope it will serve as a basis for strategic planning, and for new and enlarging sustainability studies initiatives across Mason’s curricula, scholarship and service activities.
