Student Team Wins $5,000 for Green Business Idea

On Wednesday April 29th, 2009, the CEIE 690 class entitled Environmental Sustainability and Entrepreneurship held a competition among six teams of students to develop a business plan for sustainable practices.  The students were challenged to build a business idea that would best address the three elements of sustainability: social responsibility, economic viability and environmental protection.  The top team was judged by a panel of sustainability representatives and advocates and received $5,000.  The winning team Sun Synergy Systems Services (S4) was comprised of VIT&E students Richard Ross, Elena Rubalcava, and Ali Bakhshi.  The winning concept combined vocational training for community youth and displaced veterans with design build photovoltaic services for residential and commercial applications.   Pictured from left to right are: winning students Richard Ross, Elena Rubalcava, and Ali Bakhshi, course instructor Sharon deMonsabert, and judges Mico Miller, Akili West, Jessica Heineman-Pieper, Huda Iskandar, and Khuloud Odeh.
